About the Author

Tamra J. Fairchild-Varty, MSBS, MPH, has spent over four decades at the intersection of science, public health, and deeply personal care.

She began her career as an organ procurement coordinator — work that placed her, again and again, at the exact moment a family's grief met the practical demands of paperwork, timing, and decisions no one had prepared for. From there, her path wound through healthcare education, regional health initiatives, and eventually into home care, where she co-founded Heart of the Home LLC with her husband and went on to direct and operate two home care franchises.

It was that day-to-day intimacy of home care — sitting at kitchen tables, standing in hospital corridors, answering 2 a.m. phone calls — that taught Tamra what no textbook could: families rarely fracture over money, or even over grief itself. They fracture over silence. Over the things left unsaid, undocumented, and unplanned.

She has walked alongside hundreds of families as they navigated exactly the scenarios this book describes — the courtroom that replaced the living room, the sibling holding information back, the spouse frozen by a decision no one wrote down.
